Moldovan President Maia Sandu signed a law banning news programs from Russia, which will come into force next week after publication, said the head of the national regulator – the Council on Television and Radio of the Republic – Liliana Vitu on the Rlive Internet channel.
Liliana Vicu stated that the authorities took such tough measures because of the situation in Ukraine, specifying that a large amount of misinformation in the Moldovan media occurs during the pre-election period.
“The law was signed by the president. It will probably be published next Friday in the Official Gazette, after which it will come into force. It introduced a definition of “disinformation” and harsher sanctions for it. That is, if the fact is proven, then the media may be deprived of a license for seven years,” Vitsu said.
Moldova already adopted a law on the fight against “foreign propaganda” in 2017, it was actively promoted by the then ruling Democratic Party. Basically, the programs of Russian TV channels fell under the ban. The anti-propaganda law was repealed in 2020 following a change of government in the country. At the end of February 2022, the Moldovan parliament declared a state of emergency for a period of 60 days in connection with the events in Ukraine. For this period, restrictions were imposed on television broadcasts from Russia.
