Monkeypox outbreak in Europe may be the result of two major LGBT raves in Spain and Belgium

The main hosts of this infection in wildlife are not monkeys, despite the name, but rodents, moreover, of many species. Transmission to humans was recorded long ago, in 1970 – the first case.

The infection remains not yet very adapted for transmission from person to person. Among the reasons why this happened now, many experts note that enough time has passed since the comprehensive vaccination programs for the prevention of smallpox, says immunologist Nikolai Kryuchkov.

Leading WHO adviser Dr David Heymann told The Associated Press that the unprecedented outbreak of monkeypox in Europe could be the result of two major gay and bisexual raves in Spain and Belgium.

According to him, this is now the main version that explains the rapid spread of the disease. The expert noted that monkeypox had not previously caused major outbreaks outside of Africa, where it is endemic in animals.

“Monkeypox can be spread by close contact with the lesions of an infected person. Apparently, sexual intercourse [at parties] increased the speed of transmission”, he explained.
