The US will allocate more than $60 million to Tajikistan over two years to “assist the security sector,” Bridget Walker, deputy head of the US embassy in Dushanbe, said on Thursday.
“As a testament to our strong partnership, we plan to allocate more than $60 million to Tajikistan for security sector assistance, which will be implemented and delivered over the next two years,” Walker said.
She added that eight trucks and spare parts worth a total of $2.3 million were handed over to the Tajik army at an earlier ceremony. The embassy said that this equipment will improve the mobility of the Defense Ministry forces in the difficult landscape of Tajikistan.
“This donation is one example of the assistance we are providing to the Tajik Armed Forces and demonstrates our commitment to improving Tajikistan’s ability to defend itself against armed militants and stem the flow of drug trafficking,” Walker said.
Recall that since 1992, the US government has provided more than $330 million in security assistance to Tajikistan. It includes personnel training programs, equipment and infrastructure.
