There was no consensus in NATO on Ukraine’s membership – Stoltenberg

There was no consensus in NATO on Ukraine’s membership, said Jens Stoltenberg.

In Brussels, during a press conference, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said that the alliance should learn from the situation around Ukraine and understand what kind of assistance NATO can provide to other countries wishing to join the organization.

“Since 2008, we have provided support to Kiev, but there was no consensus on granting Ukraine membership in the alliance. I think that now, after the invasion of Ukraine, a discussion is needed in NATO on how to support countries that are in a more or less similar situation to the Ukrainian one,” Stoltenberg said.

Stoltenberg stressed that NATO will draw lessons from the situation around Ukraine. According to the Secretary General, it is necessary to provide support to countries wishing to join NATO as early as possible. According to him, we are talking about such states as Georgia and Bosnia and Herzegovina.
