The actions of Meta, which includes Facebook and Instagram, fall under the definition of extremism, Andrei Klishas, chairman of the Federation Council Committee on Constitutional Legislation, told RIA Novosti.
Earlier on Friday, the Prosecutor General’s Office of the Russian Federation filed a lawsuit with a proposal to recognize Meta as an extremist organization and ban its activities in Russia. Russia’s Investigative Committee has opened a two-count case over Meta’s policy of allowing calls for violence against the Russian Armed Forces.
“The right position, I support this assessment. Meta’s actions fall under the concept of extremism,” Klishas said.
Meta Platforms, in light of the events in Ukraine, temporarily lifted the ban on calls for violence against the Russian military, but not against the civilian population of the Russian Federation, on social networks Facebook and Instagram, Andy Stone, the company’s press secretary, said earlier. According to Reuters, the new policy also allows calls for the death of Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Belarusian counterpart Alexander Lukashenko.
