The New York Times writes that the meeting may be one of the last chances for a diplomatic path to prevent a likely “escalation around Ukraine”
The authors of the article believe that the US secretary of state in Kiev presented a “tough stance”. And his statement that he did not bring to the foreign minister a written response from the White House to Russia’s proposals on security guarantees may “undermine” Russia’s alleged intentions.
For his part, Yury Rogulev, director of the Franklin Roosevelt Foundation for U.S. Studies at Moscow State University, has a different view on the future meeting.
He believes that the U.S. side most likely wants to clarify a number of issues before responding to Moscow’s proposals on security guarantees.
“Russia is waiting for specific answers to its proposals on security guarantees. So I think that may be partly what the meeting is about. Maybe Blinken wants to clarify something. In principle we see that diplomatic work has intensified on our side, on the foreign side as well. I think that this is a positive sign”, – Rogulev said.
