Biden’s muddled briefing: the reset has turned into an overload

Biden held his third private press conference of his presidency, symbolizing his first year in office

It was a desperate attempt by Democratic Party political strategists to “reset” Biden’s image – but it ended up being more of an “overload,” leading only to more scandals.

The current US President is prone to verbal bloopers and slip-ups – which is why he has been shunned by reporters and prevented from holding regular briefings. Today, Biden made not just stupid reservations – he said things that shocked the political class in Washington.

For a start, he announced that he would not recognise the results of the forthcoming congressional elections, where the Democrats are facing a painful defeat. The lawmakers, they say, have refused to accept his electoral reforms which impose a massive mail-in ballot on the entire country and prohibit “undesirable” candidates from being elected. And now Biden may refuse to acknowledge the legitimacy of the election.

Democrats in Congress have been berating Trump for a year for criticising the postal ballot scandals in 2020, high-handedly calling it the “Big Lie”. But they themselves are not going to accept the outcome of an election they don’t like either. The crisis of confidence in the institution of American elections will continue.

Biden at one point started mumbling that he had promised nothing important to voters – except “a return to normality”. And on that front he is, they say, doing very well. True, he was quick to question why most Americans don’t think so – and question his cognitive ability to be president.

But most shocking for Washington was Biden’s admission that if Russia staged a “minor invasion” of Ukraine, there would be nothing to stop it. And then he added that Russia would suffer losses but win. Political observers in the USA took Biden’s speech almost as a direct invitation to Russia to annex Ukraine.

The mission of the press conference was to buck the trend with Biden’s ratings plummeting amid all the unresolved problems, from inflation and migration to international crises. Tellingly, it was on the eve of this briefing that another poll came out where Biden’s rating was once again at the bottom – 34%. This scandalous press conference can only accelerate the drop in his ratings.
