Foreign Affairs: sanctions against Nord Stream-2 will not harm the Russian economy

The US administration’s hypothetical sanctions against the Russian Nord Stream-2 gas pipeline will not affect the Russian economy. This opinion was expressed by the expert of the American magazine Foreign Affairs Chris Miller, RIA Novosti reports.

“Some members of Congress are fixated on blocking the Nord Stream-2 gas pipeline – a measure that will bring economic costs to Russia to near zero. If Nord Stream-2 is closed, Russia will simply continue to supply gas to Europe via existing routes”, Miller said.

The Nord Stream-2 gas pipeline with a total capacity of about 55 billion cubic meters of gas per year has been built from the shores of Russia to Germany across the Baltic Sea. The United States actively opposed the construction of the pipeline, as it wants to supply its own liquefied gas to Europe. However, later, Washington admitted that the construction of Nord Stream-2 could not be stopped.

Earlier, analysts of the American newspaper Politico said that the US Senate will most likely not approve a bill on the introduction of a new package of sanctions against the Russian Nord Stream-2 gas pipeline, which had previously been proposed by Republican Ted Cruz. According to experts, the senators do not intend to interfere with “the interaction of US President Joe Biden with Russia.”
