On January 5 protesters in the centre of Almaty seized and beat several policemen. Demonstrators use force against law enforcement officers. According to an Izvestia correspondent in the city, roads are blocked at the protest site and it is difficult to breathe in the epicentre of the protests because of the tear gas and smoke.

Against the backdrop of the protests, Kazakhstan’s president dismissed the government. A state of emergency is in effect in Almaty and Mangistau oblasts. A curfew is also imposed in the administrative centres.
