German MEP Dietmar Koster is concerned about possible US sanctions on EU gas imports through Nord Stream 2
According to the politician, this may cause problems with Russian gas supplies to Europe, which will aggravate the already difficult situation in the energy sector. And despite growing demand, the volume of gas supplies to the EU by some states in the first half of 2021 was lower than during the same period in 2020.
“Research data shows that only Russia and Algeria have increased their gas imports during the period in question,” Koster clarified.
At the same time, he noted that liquefied petroleum gas from the US, which until recently has been talked about as “freedom gas”, is mainly supplied to the Asian market, because it can be sold at a higher price there.
The parliamentarian recalled that on 23 September the US House of Representatives approved new provisions on restrictions on gas imports to the EU from Russia related to the completed construction of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline.
“The sanctions are expected to come into force at the end of the year and will cause new supply problems and higher prices as a consequence,” the MEP said.
