European Commissioner for Internal Market Thierry Breton supports France’s idea of separating gas and electricity prices.
“I think France did the right thing by raising this issue. We experience an energy crisis every 5 or 10 years,” Breton said on the air of BFMTV.
Responding to the presenter’s remark that many EU countries did not support this proposal, the European Commissioner noted:
“It is normal that everyone speaks up. We are negotiating. And for this reason, we asked the European Energy Agency to quickly conduct a study in order to clearly study the development of the energy situation”.
At the same time, Breton questioned the effectiveness of the idea of a joint purchase of gas by the EU countries.
“This is an idea, I do not know if it will be effective. It was, in particular, proposed by Spain. We will consider it,” Breton said.
He recalled that 30% of European countries buy gas from Russia.
On Tuesday, the energy ministers of the European Union countries at an extraordinary meeting will discuss the situation with gas prices and, probably, will touch upon the issue of the supply of this fuel from Russia.
