Lithuania expands powers of the army to act on the border

Lithuanian military personnel received expanded powers to operate on the border against the background of sharply frequent attempts by refugees to illegally cross state borders from Belarus. It is reported by DW.

The Lithuanian Seim (unicameral parliament) on Friday, September 10, approved the corresponding resolution of President Gitanas Nauseda. Most of the deputies – 100 people – voted in support of the decision, one parliamentarian was against, two more abstained.

Now the Lithuanian military has the right to stop, check and inspect vehicles, as well as the cargo and people in them. In addition, they are allowed to use special means. What kind of means are in question is not specified in the resolution of Nauseda.
