In a joint statement by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and his American counterpart Joe Biden, which was published following the talks in Washington, the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline was called “a threat to European energy security.”
“Ukraine and the United States continue to oppose Nord Stream-2, which we regard as a threat to European energy security,” the document says.
It also notes that the United States intends to “continue to apply statutory measures and energy diplomacy, including through the recent appointment of a senior energy security adviser, to maintain a transit role and secure supplies through Ukraine during this energy transition, and to prevent the Kremlin’s use of energy as a geopolitical weapon”.
As a reminder, in July the US and Germany published an agreement on the Russian Nord Stream-2 gas pipeline. Washington acknowledged that sanctions cannot stop the implementation of the project, and Berlin has committed itself to seeking an extension of the transit of Russian gas through the territory of Ukraine.
German political expert Alexander Rahr spoke about the role of German Chancellor Angela Merkel in the construction of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline, which runs from the shores of Russia to Germany across the Baltic Sea.
