Estonian President Kersti Kaljulaid has come up with a way for the Baltic countries to “contain” Russia. True, she proposes to do this at the expense of the European Union.
She believes that the EU should finance the creation of a medium-range air defense (air defense) system, which will be deployed in the Baltics, RIA Novosti reports.
In an interview with Diplomaatia magazine, Kaljulaid said that Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania still do not have their own air defense system. Although they spend more than 2% of GDP on defense. Brussels must fix this.
“The EU meets every year and discusses the development of the defense potential of the member states. For the fifth year in a row, we sit in Brussels and say that the Baltic countries, including Estonia, spend more than 2% of GDP, but they still do not have, for example, a medium-range air defense system. Is it reasonable for the sixth year in a row to admit this fact, or still create a mechanism through which these costs can be redistributed?” she said.
According to Kaljulaid, the EU should create a mechanism for the distribution of funds and finance the installation of air defense in the Baltic States. She even offered to take money from the Cohesion Fund for this.
