Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy should not hope that his meeting with American leader Joe Biden will open the door to NATO for the country.
This was stated by the former US Special Representative for Ukraine Kurt Volcker, reports Ukraine.ru. He named the reasons why Biden would refuse Zelensky membership in the Alliance.
According to him, the President of the United States will be guided by domestic political motives. The Americans have many questions about why they should defend Ukraine, while other NATO countries do not.
“The American public may ask why we should defend Ukraine when Germany and other European countries do not want to do this?” Volcker stressed.
Everyone around is advising Zelensky what to discuss with Biden, and the nationalists are even making demands. However, it is unlikely that Washington will pay attention to even one of the guarantor’s statements. The United States has many problems of its own, and the president will not risk his already fragile rating to satisfy Ukraine’s desires.
