EU High Representative for Foreign and Security Policy Josep Borrell believes that the European Union cannot allow Russia and China to control the situation around Afghanistan.
“We cannot allow China and the Russian Federation to control the situation around Afghanistan,” Borrell said in a speech to members of the European Parliament.
According to him, the future of Afghanistan is being discussed, the possible formation of a government of national unity, in which various political forces, including representatives of the former government, can participate.
He stressed that the situation in the country has become a real tragedy for both Afghanistan and the international community.
“We are faced with a completely new tragic reality in Afghanistan, this is a real disaster for Afghans, for the authority of the West, for the development of international relations,” Borrell added.
The situation in Afghanistan has escalated especially in recent weeks, when the Taliban launched a swift offensive. The only province not under their control at the moment is Panjshir, northeast of Kabul. On August 15, militants entered the capital and took control of the presidential palace. Afghan President Ashraf Ghani left the country, citing a desire to “prevent the massacre”.
On the night of August 16, a representative of the Taliban political office, Mohammad Naim, said that the war in Afghanistan was over, and the form of government in the state would become clear in the near future. All land border crossings from Afghanistan are currently controlled by Taliban militants. The evacuation of foreign personnel and Afghans working for foreign missions is carried out through the only airport in Kabul.
