Merkel says up to 10,000 people need to be evacuated from Afghanistan

Germany may have to evacuate about 10,000 people from Afghanistan. German Chancellor Angela Merkel told her party colleagues on Monday

That number includes 2,500 support workers from Afghanistan, as well as human rights defenders, lawyers and others who could be at risk of persecution by the new government if they remain in the country after the Taliban takeover of Kabul.

Merkel also said Germany should cooperate with countries that border Afghanistan to support those fleeing the country now.

“This topic will occupy us for a very long time,” she said, party sources said.
