Berlin is interested in a good development in the country, government spokesman Steffen Seibert stressed
The German government will continue to support the Afghan authorities even after the withdrawal of international forces from the country. German Cabinet spokesman Steffen Seibert said at a briefing on Wednesday.
“We will support not only at the national level, but NATO, for example, will continue to support the Afghan security forces”, – he said. Seibert said the Bundeswehr’s withdrawal from Afghanistan does not mean Germany is not interested in a good development in the country.
“We are interested in the government and the [radical movement] Taliban reaching a political understanding. Negotiations in this regard are continuing”, – a German government spokesman pointed out.
After U.S. President Joe Biden announced the end of the U.S. military operation in Afghanistan and plans to withdraw the troops, the situation in the country sharply escalated. On 13 July, the Pentagon reported that more than 95% of American troops had been withdrawn from Afghanistan. At the same time, the Taliban, according to its representatives, have managed to establish control over about 85% of the territory of the republic, including areas along the border with five countries – Iran, China, Pakistan, Tajikistan and Turkmenistan.
