US refuses to provide military aid to Haiti

Currently, Washington has no plans to provide military assistance to Haiti. This is reported by Reuters, referring to a high-ranking representative of the American administration.

Earlier it became known that the Haitian authorities appealed to the United States with a request to send American troops to the republic after the assassination of the country’s president, Jovenel Moise, to protect the republic’s key infrastructure.

According to a Reuters source, Washington does not intend “at this time” to provide military support to Haiti. However, White House spokeswoman Jen Psaki said the White House would send a team of officers from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the US Department of Homeland Security to Port-au-Prince.

“In response to a request from the Haitian government for security assistance and an investigation [into the murder of Moise], we are sending senior officials from the FBI and the Department of Homeland Security to Port-au-Prince as soon as possible to assess the situation and determine how we can help”, – said Psaki during the briefing.

Haitian President Jovenel Moise, who has led the state since 2017, was fatally wounded in an attack on his residence by a group of unidentified assailants on 7 July. The Senate of the Republic proclaimed its Speaker Joseph Lambert interim President of the Republic.
