Blinken has told Haiti’s acting premier that the US will support democratic rule of the country

The secretary of state reiterated the US commitment to working with the republic’s government

U.S. Secretary of State Anthony Blinken, in a telephone conversation with acting Haitian Prime Minister Claude Joseph, reiterated support for democratic governance and security in the country. This was according to a State Department press release issued on Wednesday.

The conversation came as Haitian President Jovenel Moise was fatally wounded in an attack by unknown assailants on his residence on Wednesday night.

“Secretary Blinken reiterated the continued commitment of the US to work with the government of Haiti in support of the people of Haiti, democratic governance, peace and security”, – the text reads.

According to a statement from the acting prime minister’s office posted on Twitter, Joseph, in a conversation with the secretary of state, pledged to hold the general elections scheduled for 26 September in accordance with the timetable approved by the CEC. The acting prime minister appealed for calm, assuring that “the security situation in the country is under the control of the Haitian National Police and the Armed Forces of Haiti”. The Council of Ministers imposed martial law in the republic for 15 days.
