On Sunday, the first round of elections to local councils took place, the presidential party “Forward, Respublika” is seriously lagging behind its competitors, the ultra-right scored less than expected.
Macron’s party hoped to gain 15% of the vote, perhaps even more in some regions, some optimistic polls predicted. However, the presidential party convinced only about 10-11% of voters.
In terms of the total number of votes in the elections, the French right – the Republicans and their allies are in the lead, gaining 27-29% of the vote.
The ultra-right “National Association” Marine Le Pen gets about 19% – less than sociologists predicted in their pre-election assessments. This is also less than the result of the ultra-right in the previous regional elections in 2015, when they won 27.7% of the vote in the first round.
Socialists are gaining 16.5-17.5%. The result of the “greens” from the party “Europe – Ecology – Greens” – about 12-13% of the vote. The result of the extreme left “Defiant France” is about 4%.
The elections took place with a record voter turnout – less than 35% of citizens eligible to vote came to the polls. The regional elections, which will run for a second round on June 27, show the mood ahead of next year’s presidential election.
