Europe intends to reduce oil and gas consumption
The European Union has prepared a new EU strategy for relations with Russia, which includes a gradual reduction in the use of fossil fuels.
The European Union does not intend to limit the purchase of energy resources from Russia, said on Wednesday, June 16, the head of EU diplomacy Josep Borrell, writes TASS.
“No, we do not intend to restrict oil and gas imports only from Russia in order to take them from other suppliers. But as our green transition progresses, oil and gas consumption in Europe will decrease, especially oil, and this will greatly affect Russia”, – he said at a press conference on the new EU strategy for relations with Russia.
According to CDE-News, Borrell also spoke about the prospects for relations with the Russian Federation.
“In the current circumstances, the resumption of the EU-Russia partnership, allowing for closer cooperation, seems a distant prospect”, – he said.
The diplomat also said that a report had been prepared for the EU summit, which analyzed relations with Russia.
“But the heads of state at the summit in June will determine the future policy, this is their prerogative. We hope that they will accept this report and advise us on how to proceed”, – Borrell added.
On the eve, Borrell announced that the new EU strategy in relations with Russia will be based on three principles: repel, deter and interact.
