Russia and Turkey highly appreciated the activities of the Joint Center for Controlling the Ceasefire and All Military Actions in Karabakh, the Russian Foreign Ministry said following the consultations held the day before.
Russian-Turkish ministerial consultations were held in Moscow on Tuesday, June 8. From the Turkish side, Deputy Foreign Minister Sedat Onal took part in them, from the Russian side – Deputy Foreign Ministers Sergei Vershinin, Alexander Grushko and Andrei Rudenko.
“A high assessment was given to the activities of the Russian-Turkish Joint Center for Controlling the Ceasefire and All Military Operations in the Nagorno-Karabakh Conflict Zone. It was agreed to continue work on unblocking economic and transport links in the Transcaucasus”, – the statement says.
The sides considered a set of issues of international assistance in resolving the Syrian, Nagorno-Karabakh, Palestinian-Israeli and other regional crises, the political aspects of their settlement on the basis of international norms and the relevant UN Security Council resolutions.
In Nagorno-Karabakh, hostilities resumed in September 2020, which became a continuation of the long-term conflict. With the mediation of Russia, the parties managed to reach an agreement.
A joint statement by the leaders of Armenia, Azerbaijan and Russia on a ceasefire in Karabakh was circulated on November 10. Azerbaijan and Armenia pledged to stop at their positions and exchange prisoners of war. Yerevan handed over Kelbajar, Lachin and Aghdam districts to Baku. Russian peacekeepers were brought into the region.
On January 11, 2021, Moscow hosted trilateral talks between Russian President Vladimir Putin, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan. As a result, a joint statement on the development of Nagorno-Karabakh was signed.
