The head of the expert council of the Strategic Development Fund, Igor Shatrov, commented in an interview with RT on the statement of Secretary of State Anthony Blinken that the United States is seeking “automatic” measures from Germany against the consequences of the work of Nord Stream-2.
The United States continues to put pressure on European countries to prevent a new stage of cooperation between Europe and Russia, the political scientist explained.
“The United States did not abandon the idea to prevent the launch of this project (Nord Stream-2 – ed.) and the beginning of a new stage of cooperation between Europe and Russia, and the receipt of gas from Russia by Europe. And therefore, realizing that they cannot interfere with the construction, they count on the fact that they can still pressurize Europe and Nord Stream 2 will not be launched as an operating one”, – Shatrov said.
However, according to him, Germany “participates in this project deliberately and is waiting for gas, and not just completion of construction”, therefore, despite the actions of the United States, Germany will find a way out of the situation.
At the same time, Shatrov noted that the United States will defend its interests to the last.
“Those who hoped that the confrontation was over, that Nord Stream-2 was completed and the United States would simply stop working against it, they were wrong, it was naive to think so. Because the United States is not currently fighting Nord Stream 2 for the sake of principle, it is fighting for the interests of its exporters of liquefied natural gas and will defend these interests to the last”, – the political scientist concluded.
Earlier, as RIA Novosti reported, US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken announced that Washington is seeking from Berlin “automatic” measures against the consequences of the work of Nord Stream-2.
In addition, he noted that “the completion of the pipeline and its commissioning are different things and the United States will continue to work to ensure that the pipeline does not start functioning”.
