Forces that may be related to Iran, using combat drones, several times carried out attacks on military facilities located in Iraq that are used by the US military, EADaily reports, citing an article in The New York Times (NYT).
According to the sources of the publication, over the past two months, military infrastructure facilities used by foreign troops in Iraq have been attacked by drones at least three times. All attacks took place at night. It is noted that the bases on which the CIA and special forces are located were subjected to attacks.
“Iraqi and American officials have reported that Iran is carrying out these drone attacks in an effort to minimize losses that could result from US retaliation”, – the NYT said.
The material also names targets for attacks in which such drones could be used. It is believed that we are talking about the April 14 strikes on the airport in Erbil, where the CIA hangar is located, on the May 8 attack on the Ain al-Assad airbase in Anbar province, as well as on the airbase in northern Erbil, used by the US Joint Special Operations Command.
In early January last year, the Iraqi parliament decided to withdraw foreign troops from the country, and also decided to revise the format of cooperation with the international antiterrorist coalition led by the United States. This happened after the American operation, as a result of which on the night of January 3, 2020, an Iranian general, the commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps special forces Qasem Soleimani and the deputy head of the Iraqi Shiite militia Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis were killed in the Baghdad airport area.
Later, the international coalition led by the United States handed over to the Iraqi military a number of facilities where the American military had previously been deployed, including several air bases and the headquarters of the coalition’s military advisers.
