Ukrainian ambassador to Germany Andriy Melnyk has expressed hope that Germany will change its position on Nord Stream-2 after the fall Bundestag elections, according to an article in the German newspaper Berliner Zeitung
“The subject of Nord Stream 2″ is not closed for us yet. There may well be a rethink after the [Bundestag] elections”, – he argued, stressing that Ukraine’s interests are “ignored” because of the pipeline. The diplomat added that because the US refused to impose sanctions on the pipeline operator, “many in Ukraine were disappointed.
The German government considers Nord Stream 2 an economic project that needs to be completed. At the same time, Berlin insists that Ukraine should retain its role as a gas transit country in the future.
The project is opposed by the Greens, who have a theoretical chance to be in the next German government.
We shall remind you that elections to Bundestag will be held on September 26, 2021.
