Police detained the most violent protesters, Fox News reported
The riots, accompanied by vandalism and clashes with police, ended Tuesday night in Portland (Oregon), the action, organized by local activists on the anniversary of the death of African-American George Floyd, police officers declared a riot. This was reported by the Fox News television channel on Wednesday.
About 200 demonstrators dressed in black had gathered the night before outside the city court. They tried to set fire to the police station and started throwing stones and bottles at it. Windows were smashed, walls were damaged and metal barriers were put up.
“We warned specific people that if they continued these actions they would be subject to detention and the use of force”, – the channel quoted a Portland police officer as saying. Police detained the most aggressive protesters, the number of those taken into custody was not disclosed.
The protesters continued smashing windows and setting bins on fire, leading police to detain some of them, the total number of people taken into custody was not reported.
Some of the protesters then proceeded to the town hall where they continued to smash windows, including in nearby offices and cafes. At 22:00 local time, the police declared a riot and took additional measures to restore order, including making arrests for “involvement in criminal activities”.
