The Presidents of Belarus and Azerbaijan, Alexander Lukashenko and Ilham Aliyev, discussed the situation in their countries by telephone, exchanged views on topical issues, the press service of the Belarusian leader said.
“The presidents of Belarus and Azerbaijan, Alexander Lukashenko and Ilham Aliyev, had a telephone conversation on the morning of May 22. The heads of state discussed the situation in both countries, exchanged views on topical issues”, – the statement on the official website of the head of state says.
It is noted that Lukashenko thanked his colleague for the support and supplies of hydrocarbons to Belarus. In addition, the heads of the two states noted with satisfaction the growth of trade turnover and the presence of great potential in the development of bilateral relations.
“The President of Azerbaijan informed in detail about the situation on the Armenian-Azerbaijani border, brought Azerbaijan’s position on the well-known incident that arose some time ago. As Alexander Lukashenko stressed, Belarus hopes that the situation will be resolved in the coming days”, – the message says.
As for the bilateral Belarusian-Azerbaijani agenda, as reported in the press service, the heads of state discussed in detail the areas of cooperation and the implementation of the agreements that were reached during Lukashenka’s recent visit to Azerbaijan.
According to the report, an Azerbaijani delegation of urban planning specialists will arrive in Belarus in the near future, “together with the Belarusian colleagues, a plan for starting construction work in the liberated territories” in Nagorno-Karabakh will be worked out. In addition, an agricultural delegation from Azerbaijan is also expected, there is also a serious interest in the Belarusian experience, the press service said. “In general, within the framework of the upcoming meetings, concrete plans for the work of Belarusian builders and other specialists in Azerbaijan will be drawn up”, the message says.
At the end of September 2020, hostilities resumed in Nagorno-Karabakh, which became a continuation of the long-term conflict and led to casualties among the civilian population. The parties made several attempts to conclude a truce, but the tripartite agreement reached on the night of November 10 turned out to be successful. With the mediation of Moscow, Azerbaijan and Armenia agreed to completely cease fire and exchange prisoners and bodies of the dead. Yerevan also handed over Kelbajar, Lachin and Aghdam districts to Baku. In addition, Russian peacekeepers are stationed in the region.
