Blinken in conversation with Maas says US opposes Nord Stream 2

U.S. Secretary of State Anthony Blinken said Tuesday in a telephone conversation with German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas that the U.S. opposes the Nord Stream 2 project.

This was stated in a written statement by State Department spokesman Ned Price, released after the talks

“Secretary Blinken and Foreign Secretary Maass discussed the importance of transatlantic cooperation to respond to the challenges posed by China and Russia, to take steps to help de-escalate tensions in the Middle East, and to ensure the withdrawal of troops from Afghanistan in an appropriate manner. Secretary Blinken stressed the importance of the US commitment to working with allies and partners to counter Russian efforts to undermine our collective security, and in this regard pointed out that the US opposes the Nord Stream 2 pipeline”, –  the diplomat claimed.

The US will continue to investigate entities involved in Nord Stream 2 and warn of the risk of sanctions, the statement said.
