U.S. to continue providing assistance to Afghanistan after withdrawal of its troops

US Special Representative for Afghanistan Zalmay Khalilzad noted that the country will be among the first recipients of American and foreign aid.

US special envoy for Afghanistan Zalmay Khalilzad said in an interview with Der Spiegel on Monday evening that the United States will continue to provide financial and humanitarian assistance to Afghanistan after the withdrawal of American troops from the Islamic Republic.

“We will not leave Afghanistan. When the withdrawal is complete, we will open a new chapter in our partnership, Khalilzad said. Afghanistan will be among the first recipients of US and foreign aid, which includes support for Afghan security forces, development assistance and humanitarian assistance”.

The US special envoy noted that the American allies “are saying the same thing”.

“The Afghan Security Forces are a national institution worthy of support, and we will continue to support them and provide them with the financial assistance they need. We will have a strong embassy”, – Khalilzad continued, stressing that the United States will do its best to end the violence in Afghanistan.

“Violence is bad and our goal is to help end it through a peace agreement”.

In the absence of such an agreement and the continuation of hostilities, according to Khalilzad, the situation could become much worse.

“For our part, we will do everything in our power, except to participate in the war again to prevent the development of such a scenario”, –  Khalilzad assured.

At the same time, he noted that the United States will continue to closely follow the development of events.

“We will remain good friends of Afghanistan and will continue to support it, and we will also be ready for alternative futures”, – the US special envoy concluded.
