Iranian Foreign Ministry spoke on preparation of cooperation agreement with Russia

Tehran and Moscow are working on a new cooperation agreement, which will be comprehensive, said Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Said Khatibzade.

“During the trip of the Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov to Tehran it was agreed to work on a document on comprehensive cooperation. As soon as there is a text that can be signed, the document will certainly be signed”, – Khatibzade said during a briefing published in Telegram-channel of the department. He emphasized that the previous agreement, which was automatically renewed in March, is currently in force.

In February, the Russian ambassador to Tehran, Levan Dzhagaryan, told RIA Novosti that Russia was open to discussing a new relationship agreement with Iran.

An agreement on the fundamentals of relations and principles of cooperation between the Russian Federation and Iran was signed in Moscow on March 12, 2001 by Russian leader Vladimir Putin and then Iranian President Mohammad Khatami.

The contract was concluded for a period of ten years, it is renewed automatically every five years, unless one of the parties to the contract notifies the other in writing at least one year before the expiration of the relevant period of its intention to terminate it.
