Israeli and Iranian forces have stepped up their fight at sea in recent years, with a series of attacks on ships of both countries
This is according to an article published in The New York Times on Friday.
“Israel and Iran have been waging a covert war throughout the Middle East for years, mostly on land and in the air. Now ships in the Mediterranean and Red Seas are under attack”, – the story said.
According to the paper’s official sources, “Since 2019, Israel has attacked ships carrying Iranian oil and arms in the eastern Mediterranean and Red Sea.”
“Iran, apparently without attracting attention, has carried out covert attacks in response”, – the piece noted.
The sources specified that since 2019, Israeli saboteurs have staged attacks on at least 10 vessels carrying Iranian cargoes. According to the publication, the Iranian side believes that 20 ships have been attacked. For the most part, these were vessels carrying fuel or weapons to Syria.
“The extent of Iran’s response is unclear. Most of the attacks are carried out clandestinely and without public statements of responsibility”, – the article said.
