NYT: far more US military deployed in Afghanistan than claimed

The official data state that there are about 2.5 thousand military personnel in Afghanistan, but in reality there are more than 3.5 thousand of them.

This was reported by The New York Times, citing its sources in the U.S., Europe and Afghanistan.

According to the newspaper, the discrepancy between the declared and the actual number of U.S. servicemen is due to the fact that the presence of the U.S. military personnel on the territory of Afghanistan is unofficial. The New York Times notes that for the Pentagon, understating the actual number of troops abroad is a normal practice.

The administration of former US President Donald Trump signed a peace agreement with the Taliban (banned in Russia) in Doha in February 2020. According to the document, the U.S. and its allies will undertake to withdraw all troops from Afghanistan within 14 months; in return, the Taliban will not use the country for activities that threaten the security of the U.S. and its allies.
