The State Department said – “there is no chance”.
As reported by EADaily, the head of the press service of the US State Department Ned Price said that the United States ruled out in the near future the possibility of normalizing relations with the government of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.
“As for Bashar al-Assad, then, of course, he remains in power, despite ten years of civil war”, – the spokesman for the US Foreign Ministry admitted, stressing that the Syrian leader “lost legitimacy during this time”.
“It would be correct to say that Assad did nothing to restore his legitimacy”.
The State Department spokesman was also asked whether Washington continues to call for Bashar al-Assad to leave the presidency, as was the case under previous administrations in the White House.
“There is no chance that the US will normalize relations with his government in the near term”, – Price replied evasively.
