Armenian PM Pashinyan says Head of the General Staff of Armenia relieved of his post

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan stated that the head of the General Staff of the Armed Forces, Onik Gasparyan, has been relieved of his post.

“Taking as a basis the fact that President Armen Sarkissian did not sign the draft decree on the release of the Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces, but did not dispute it in the Constitutional Court, since March 10, Head of the General Staff of the Armed Forces Onik Gasparyan has been relieved of his post by force of law”, – Press service of the government of Armenia quoted Pashinyan as saying .

However, it is reported that on Wednesday Sargsyan sent a statement to the Constitutional Court with a request to determine compliance with the Constitution of the law “On military service and the status of a serviceman”, according to which the head of the General Staff is appointed and dismissed.

The political crisis in Armenia exacerbated after the head of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of the republic, Onik Gasparyan, called for the resignation of Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan at the end of February. In response, Pashinyan has twice sent the Armenian President a petition to dismiss Gasparyan.
