Protesters opposing a military coup in Myanmar blocked rail links between Yangon and the southern city on Tuesday, hours after a UN envoy warned the army of the “serious consequences” of any harsh response to pro-democracy demonstrations.

At the same time, the Myanmar military denies the coup and promises to return power.
On Tuesday, Myanmar’s military denied that the overthrow of the elected government was a coup, saying their actions were justified as the November election fraud was not addressed and they would return power after a new election.
“Our goal is to hold elections and transfer power to the winning party”, – Brigadier General Za Min Tun, a spokesman for the ruling council, said at the military’s first press conference since the February 1 seizure of power.
The military did not give a date for the new elections, but declared a state of emergency for one year.
