Two completely opposing viewpoints have emerged from Joe Biden’s team regarding further engagement with Iran
The new US president has already managed to assure other countries that Washington will return to fulfilling its commitments under the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action on Iran’s nuclear programme. According to some reports, Biden will even appoint a special envoy to Iran, Robert Malley, a well-known supporter of cooperation with Tehran.
However, as Bloomberg notes, Mulley’s position contradicts the intentions of Biden’s other two stooges, namely his national security adviser Jake Sullivan and Secretary of State nominee Anthony Blinken.
Sullivan said last month that it would only be up to Iran to get the US back into the JCPOA. Although it was the states that broke the deal, Biden’s adviser is hypocritically demanding compliance from Iran. Blinken has not strayed far from the policies of the Donald Trump administration at all. Hiding behind his desire for a new “longer and stronger” deal, he has promised the Senate to start consultations with Middle East allies.
“Indeed, the Trump administration itself has explained its policy of maximum pressure on Iran as a means of forcing the regime into a better deal”, – the US agency wrote, noting that Mally’s idea is incompatible with the position of Sullivan and Blinken.
At the same time, Bloomberg recalls that Biden promised during the election campaign to continue the sanctions on Iran “for human rights violations, ballistic missile development and support for terrorism”.
