Republicans may support removal of Trump from power after riots – media

A number of GOP members, including former and current officials of the Donald Trump administration and members of Congress, are ready to discuss possible scenarios for the removal of the head of state from power after the riots in Washington on January 6. This was announced on Thursday by the Axios information portal, citing sources in the party.

The reason for the discussion of such radical plans was fears that Trump’s stay in power for another two weeks, remaining before the inauguration of Joseph Biden, could lead to new unrest and clashes. Aggravation of the confrontation will negatively affect the attitude not only towards the outgoing president, but also the Republican Party in general, its representatives believe.

As possible options for action, unnamed Republican representatives cite impeachment proceedings, but there will probably not be enough time for it. Another way to remove Trump could be the enactment of the 25th amendment to the US Constitution, which allows the resignation of the head of state if requested by the vice president and most executive heads.

However, this path requires support from Vice President Michael Pence. Congress may also announce a vote of no confidence to Trump, however, the portal notes, this step will not give noticeable practical results.
