There was a clash between protesters demanding the resignation of Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and a ruling party deputy
Police on Monday began detaining protesters who had gathered outside the parliament building in central Yerevan. This was reported by a TASS correspondent.
At the moment an extraordinary session is being held in the National Assembly. There has been a clash between protesters demanding the resignation of the country’s Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and a ruling party MP. Police are pushing protesters away from the parliament building and detaining the most active protesters.
Protests have been taking place in Armenia for more than a month. The opposition is unhappy with the Nagorno-Karabakh peace terms agreed on November 9 by Pashinyan and Russian and Azerbaijani presidents Vladimir Putin and Ilham Aliyev, and is blaming the prime minister for the republic’s economic and social problems. President Armen Sarkisian has called for early parliamentary elections and for a National Accord Government to take over power before the elections. Pashinyan, on the other hand, says a change of government can only come about through elections. Several of his supporters do not rule them out.
