Biden calls approval of second US COVID vaccine an important step towards recovery

The US president-elect said it was now necessary to produce enough doses of the vaccine, organise distribution of the drug and mass vaccination of the population

US President-elect Joseph Biden has commended the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for approving an application by US company Moderna to register its new coronavirus vaccine under an expedited emergency procedure. A statement to this effect was published on Friday on the website of the politician’s campaign headquarters.

“Today’s authorisation by the Food and Drug Administration to use Moderna’s COVID-19 vaccine in emergencies is another milestone in our battle to defeat the crisis facing our country today”, –  Biden said. He stressed that enough doses of the vaccine must now be produced, the distribution of the drug organised and mass vaccination of the population organised.

The FDA on Friday approved the use of the coronavirus vaccine Moderna. BioNTech and Pfizer had previously obtained similar approval, and their vaccine began use in the United States on Monday.

In all, more than 17.4 million people in the USA have been infected with the coronavirus since the pandemic began, 313,588 of whom have died, according to Johns Hopkins University calculations, which are based on federal and local government information. The country ranks first in the world for both of these figures.
