Christopher Robinson, US Undersecretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs, said the United States would continue to impose sanctions on the Nord Stream-2 project and hoped to thwart its implementation.
“We do not want to impose sanctions, but we will use these powers and these tools to stop the project”, – he argued.
“I would say that these sanctions are working and we will stop this pipeline”, – the American diplomat said.
On December 11, the Senate of the US Congress approved the draft US military budget for the 2021 fiscal year (began on October 1), which, in particular, provides for sanctions on the Nord Stream-2 and Turkish Stream gas pipelines, as well as against Turkey due to the purchase her Russian anti-aircraft missile systems (ZRS) S-400. The House of Representatives of Congress voted in favor of the draft on December 8.
On December 4, Russian presidential press secretary Dmitry Peskov said that the Kremlin considers the expansion of the US sanctions against Nord Stream-2 to be a manifestation of unfair competition, and assures that Moscow will do everything to protect its interests.
