French foreign minister to visit US after Biden administration comes to power

Jean-Yves Le Drian said he hoped the United States would align its positions with those of Europe, in particular by returning to the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action on Iran’s nuclear programme and the Paris climate agreement

French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian will pay a visit to the United States as soon as Joseph Biden takes office. He made such a statement in an interview with Le Figaro newspaper on Sunday.

“I will go to the US as soon as Biden takes office”, –  Le Drian noted. The minister recalled that the Democratic candidate had already announced during the campaign his intention to return to the Paris climate agreement, which France sees as a positive development. Le Drian also expressed the hope that the US will bring its positions closer to those of Europe on other issues as well, in particular, that it may return to the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) on the Iranian nuclear programme. According to the French diplomat, this issue will be discussed during his visit.

At the same time, Le Drian pointed out that Europe has changed during Donald Trump’s presidency.

“It has become more mature, it has reaffirmed its sovereignty”, –  he stressed. According to him, Europe now needs a more balanced relationship with the US.  – “We are optimistic because the US needs strong allies”, –  Le Drian explained. – “It is in their interest to have a balanced transatlantic relationship.”
