Zelensky was reprimanded in the European Parliament for wanting to dissolve the Constitutional Court

According to the EU parliamentarians, the dismissal of judges of the Constitutional Court “constitutes a clear interference with the role of the judiciary”.

According to Interfax-Ukraine, Member of the European Parliament Charles Goerens said that the initiative of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to “reset” the Constitutional Court after the decision to abolish liability for inaccurate declarations is interference with the role of the judiciary and undermining the principle of separation of powers.

“The diminution of the powers of judges or their dismissal for political or ideological reasons constitutes a clear interference with the role of the judiciary and, as such, undermines the principle of separation of powers. Consequently, such a development of events is unacceptable for any state that considers itself democratic. In a democratic state, it is generally impossible to put up with unconstitutional steps”, – the MEP said in a comment to the Capital newspaper, referring to the situation after the Constitutional Court’s decision to abolish criminal liability for declaring false information.

As reported, on October 27, the Constitutional Court declared unconstitutional a number of provisions of the law “On the prevention of corruption” and criminal liability for declaring false information. This decision drew criticism from Ukraine’s international partners and creditors.
