Iraq is ready to promote cooperation with Russia in the fight against terrorism, said the Foreign Minister
Iraq hopes to sign 14 bilateral documents with Russia in 2021, covering various areas of cooperation, including oil and gas, healthcare and trade. This was announced on Wednesday by Iraqi Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Fouad Hussein following talks with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.
“We are currently working on a total of 14 bilateral documents, including the memorandum of understanding. We are ready to intensify work on them in order to approach the meeting of the bilateral intergovernmental commission, which we plan to hold next year, for their signing. These documents cover various areas: education, transport, healthcare, oil and gas and trade. We will be leading the way to their signing next year”, – he said.
Fuad Hussain said that at the meeting the sides discussed security challenges within Iraq and at the regional level and ways to counter them. The meeting also focused on the situation in Syria and ways to help ensure security and normalise life in the Arab Republic.
“As for the Middle East settlement theme, the Russian side sounded constructive ideas about ways of settlement. For our part, we will stick to them and after some time we will continue discussing this topic”, – he added.
The Iraqi diplomat also expressed his gratitude to the Russian leadership for their active cooperation in the field of counterterrorism. “I confirm our commitment to cooperation with Russia at various international venues, which would be in the interests of our countries and common interests,” he concluded.
