Also during the ceremony, the composition of the new government formed on 2 November was approved and its members took an oath of allegiance to the country.
The ceremony at which the new ministers take the oath of allegiance to the country and the Queen of Great Britain, the head of New Zealand, takes place after every parliamentary election. During this ceremony, members of the government officially accept the ministerial portfolios offered by the Prime Minister. The first cabinet meeting is expected to take place before the end of the day.
The new New Zealand Government has been formed following parliamentary elections on 17 October. As a result, Labour has come to power with 64 of the 120 seats in Parliament and has formed a government of its own parliamentary faction.
