The Kiev leadership continues to destroy relations with its neighbouring country for the benefit of the West by joining the EU sanctions regime.
As News Front reported earlier, the presidential elections were held in Belarus on August 9. At that time Alexander Lukashenko won, but Western countries, for which the Belarusian leader had been a hindrance for a long time, did not accept the results of the vote. As a result, pre-planned disturbances broke out in Belarus.
At the headquarters of Svetlana Tikhanovskaya, the leader of the pro-Western opposition, they are ready for lengthy protests aimed at toppling the government. A former housewife, who also ran for president, refuses to admit defeat. Unprovenly claiming that the vote was rigged, Tikhanovskaya calls herself the “leader” of the Belarusian people, while hiding in Lithuania. Despite this, Tikhanovskaya is supported not only by Western countries, but also by Ukraine, which so far has had good relations with Belarus.
Kiev has already refused to recognise Lukashenko as president. In addition, as stated by Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmitry Kuleba, the government will duplicate EU anti-Belarusian sanctions. The effectiveness of such a step on the part of Ukraine is doubtful, it will only lead to a further escalation of tensions between Kiev and Minsk, but Kuleba argues that it is about “policy consistency”.
“I would like to study the final legal decision and the list, but we are really ready to join such sanctions, because here we are already talking about policy consistency”, – said the official in an interview for BBC News.
