Reuters sources in Washington report that the American package of measures against Belarusian officials is ready.
The USA refused to join the sanctions of Great Britain and Canada against Alexander Lukashenko and his entourage. This was announced on Wednesday, September 30, by Reuters, citing sources.
So, on Tuesday London and Ottawa banned entry and froze the assets of Alexander Lukashenko, his eldest son Viktor and six other high-ranking officials of the republic.
According to Reuters, the United States will not join the sanctions yet, as the White House “expects a consensus among the countries of the Eurozone on this issue” at a meeting of the European Council this week.
At the same time, one of the agency’s interlocutors noted that the package of measures against Belarus has already been prepared by the United States authorities. However, nothing is known about the timing of their introduction.
As a reminder, the British authorities announced the imposition of sanctions against Alexander Lukashenko and seven high-ranking officials of Belarus.
Recently French President Emmanuel Macron and Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda called for an early introduction of EU sanctions against Belarus. For the second month, Brussels has not been able to agree on restrictive measures.
Also, the Belarusian Foreign Ministry said that since Tuesday, September 29, the country has been introducing symmetric restrictive measures against Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia in response to the sanctions imposed by these states against Minsk.
