Lithuania complained to the US about BelNPP

According to TASS, Lithuanian Foreign Minister Linas Linkevicius, who is on a visit to the United States, said that Vilnius had asked Washington for assistance in ensuring the security of the Belarusian nuclear power plant (BelNPP), located near the Lithuanian border and 50 km from the capital of Lithuania.

“During a meeting with US Deputy Energy Secretary Mark Menezes, the Foreign Minister asked for the constant attention of the American administration to the BelNPP project and assistance in ensuring its security,” the press service of the Lithuanian Foreign Ministry said on Friday.

Lithuania has long argued that the BelNPP project is being carried out in violation of international requirements in the field of nuclear energy. The Seimas declared BelNPP a threat to Lithuania’s national security, and also legally prohibited the purchase and export of its electricity through its power grids. Minsk has repeatedly stressed that the plant’s safety will be ensured in accordance with the highest standards.
