The US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo’s official visit to Cyprus is scheduled for Saturday, September 12, to negotiate a de-escalation of tensions in the eastern Mediterranean as Turkey refuses to withdraw its drilling and naval vessels from disputed areas.
Pompeo’s visit was originally scheduled for early this year, but it was postponed due to escalating tensions between Tehran and Washington.
“I will work on this project trying to make sure I understand the risks that come with the perspective of the people of Cyprus. Problems need to be solved in a diplomatic and peaceful way. We hope that there will be a real dialogue, and we hope that the military assets that are there will be withdrawn”, – he said.
Pompeo explained that his visit to Cyprus will complement the telephone conversations between US President Donald Trump and Greek Prime Minister Mitsotakis and Turkish President Erdogan.
