UN Secretary General highly appreciated Abe’s role as Japanese leader in the international community.
Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, who had previously announced his resignation, had a telephone conversation with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, during which the parties discussed bilateral cooperation. This was announced on Thursday by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan.
It is noted that the UN Secretary General highly appreciated Abe’s role as Japanese leader in the international community and expressed hope that Japan will actively participate in the fight against the new coronavirus. Abe, in turn, personally told Guterres why he decided to resign and stressed the importance of cooperation with the UN in the fight against the pandemic.
Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said on August 28 that he wanted to resign due to deteriorating health conditions. He also told the ruling coalition of the LDP and Komeito that he was not going to appoint an interim prime minister but planned to stay in office until the LDP presented a new candidate to replace him. According to the party charter, the next head of the LDP will hold this position until the end of September 2021, when the term of the resigned Abe expires. After that, new elections of the chairman will be held for a standard three-year term.
